Temple of the Dog were formed in 1990 as a tribute to the late Andrew Wood of Seattle rock group Mother Love Bonewho died of a heroin overdose. They took their name from a lyric in the Mother Love Bonesong, "Man of Golden Words". The project was fronted by Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, Wood's close friend and roommate, and also included Wood's former bandmates Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron, and lead guitarist Mike McCready.
